Murrieta

  • Overview of Murrieta

Conveniently located right in the center of the Los Angeles-San Diego metropolis, Murrieta CA is situated in the southwestern portion of Riverside County. Home to nearly 111,000 residents, the city experienced historic growth of over 133 percent in the decade spanning 2000 and 2010.

Though Murrieta was one of the fastest-growing cities in California during that time, its beginnings are much more modest. Its namesake, Juan Murrieta, along with three other men, including his brother Ezequiel, purchased Mexican land grants in the area totaling 52,000 acres. Murrieta later acquired his brother’s share of the land and brought 7,000 sheep to feed in the valley’s meadows in 1873.

In 1882, the Murrieta brothers granted California Southern Railroad a 100-foot-wide right-of-way through the valley. By 1884, a townsite was mapped out along the railroad and a depot was constructed in 1887.

Because of the transcontinental route of Southern California Railroad — and the hot springs that were originally enjoyed by the flock of sheep — Murrieta grew to about 800 people by 1890. The Murrieta Hot Springs Resort brought international fame to the booming town well into the 20th century.

In the early 1980s, the construction of Interstate 15 fueled a second boom. As suburban neighborhoods began to spring up, Murrieta soon became a bedroom community for employees who worked in nearby Los Angeles and San Diego counties.

Today, Murrieta is that rare combination of small town charm with the conveniences of a city. Destinations like Copper Canyon Park and the other 50 parks in the city allow you to enjoy the temperate weather and breathtaking scenery that Murrieta is famous for.

Regardless of whether you’re in search of a quiet place to raise a family as you start a career in a larger metro area nearby or you’re looking for a community that offers an enticing location to retire, Murrieta is ideally situated. The fertile soil of the valley means the city is close to some of the best wineries in the world.

The fact that Murrieta is one of the fast-growing cities in California shouldn’t come as a surprise — especially when you consider the exceptional neighborhoods it has to offer. Copper Canyon, for example, is a master-planned community that consists of several neighborhoods.

Because each one was developed by a different builder, the neighborhoods within Copper Canyon also boast their own uniqueness as well. In addition to being the home of Copper Canyon Park, the community also has a number of other parks and Cole Canyon Elementary School.

The Alta Murrieta neighborhood is conveniently located near the intersection of Murrieta Springs Road and Escondido Freeway. The community is marked by gently winding streets and homes that primarily feature Mediterranean or Spanish designs. Picnic tables, a park with sports fields and numerous cul-de-sacs provide plenty of opportunities to spend time with family, friends and neighbors.
